Why a Free Walking Tour?

For many tourists, the Free Walking Tour concept is an alternative to traditional guided tours. Free Tours are already available in many cities around the world and are designed for solo travelers. Contrary to regular tour services, there is not a set price that you have to pay in advance for taking a tour. Instead, you pay the amount that you consider appropriate after your tour experience by tipping your guide. ´Free´ doesn´t mean worthless – just the opposite is the case. Our guides don´t receive any other income apart from the tips from their guests, so they work extra hard to make sure that you have a great time on the tour. Instead of lapsing into routine after a while, their motivation to provide a top-quality tour has to be high – day by day, tour by tour. In Vienna, guided walking tours generally cost 20 and 40 Euro per person and you have to pay regardless of whether you are satisfied with the tour or not. Our Free Walking Tours let you decide how much the tour is worth.

Who will be my guide?

In Austria, all tour guides must be officially licensed. As a result, our guides are knowledgeable professionals and have completed a two-year apprenticeship. So, why do these Vienna experts work “for free”? It’s because they realize that their level of income directly reflects the level of effort they put into their tours and they love this concept! Our guides know that the better the tour, the better the tips so they always strive to be the best of the best.

Where does the tour start and end?

All of our tours start at our meeting point in front of the Albertina building, right next to the fountain ´Albrechtsbrunnen´ (street level, not upstairs at the museum´s entrance!) – just look for our green umbrella!

To get to Albertina by public transport use metro lines U1, U2 or U4, get out at Karlsplatz and take the exit “Oper” (opera). Also, tram lines 1,2,71 and D take you to the stop “Kärntner Ring/Oper”.

Our walking tour will end close to Schwedenplatz next to the canal.

Which languages are available?

Our Free Walking Tours are available in English and German. Occasionally, we also offer Free Walking Tours in Spanish. Please check available dates on our website.

What will I see on the tour?

Our Free Walking Tours lead through the center of the city and focus on the inner city’s highlights. Please note, that you won´t enter any sights or museums and therefore the tour doesn´t include any entrance fees. In addition to architecture and history, you will learn quite a lot about local traditions and hear some interesting gossip and legends about the city!

What happens if I´m late?

As we try to start our tours on time, we ask our guests to arrive at the meeting point 15 minutes before starting time. If you have a reservation, it will expire 5 minutes before starting time. Due to organizational reasons, it is not possible to join a halfway through a tour or catch up with the group somewhere on the route.

What happens when it rains cats and dogs/it is snowing/it´s 40 C° in the shade?

We are 100% weather-resistant. Our tours operate 363 days per year, seven days a week. Just make sure to bring proper equipment, such as raincoats, umbrellas, sunscreen, hats or caps, and wear appropriate shoes.

What about tipping the guide?

Our Free Walking Tour guides don´t receive any set income from the company, they work on a tips-only basis. You get to decide how much his or her tour was worth to you. It´s recommended to bring small notes with you on the tour, so you can adapt the amount you want to tip your guide based on the tour quality and your level of satisfaction.

Can children join the tour?

Children under 16 accompanied by a parent are very welcome on our Free Walking Tours. There is no need to book for them in advance.

Are the tours accessible for wheelchairs?

Our tours through old town contain a few inclines and uneven surfaces, such as cobblestones, and can easily last 2,5 hours. Despite this, they are all manageable for wheelchair users, as long as they are accompanied by an able-bodied individual.

Why aren´t all of your tours free?

We think that a Free Walking Tour is the best option to get introduced to a city – and everybody should have the possibility to join it regardless of their budget. However, a 2,5 hour tour can provide only the most general information. It´s impossible to squeeze in all the interesting things to see in Vienna into such a small amount of time. That´s why we offer other tours that give a deeper insight into specific topics. As we have to contract – and pay – specialized guides for these tours in advance, we also have to ask our guests to pay an attendance fee in advance. Tourism is one of the biggest businesses in the world, and we want to be part of it – but as a fair player. That´s why our prices for paid tours are very reasonable and we promise that you will get best quality with us!

Are there any restrooms on the way?

Don´t worry! When you have a sudden need during the tour, there are several restrooms on the way. Just let your guide know and they will look for an appropriate stop. Most guides also offer a little tour break in a restaurant, where you can find food and drinks, restrooms, and free Wi-Fi.

How to book?

How can I join?

Demand for our Free Walking Tours is very high, especially during the summer season, so we advise you to make a reservation in advance. You can book up to 5 spots per tour through our website if there are still free places on your desired date. After booking, you will receive a confirmation. The day of your Free Tour you should show up at the meeting point 15 minutes before your tour starts and ´check-in´ with our day manager. Please note that your reservation expires 5 minutes before the start of the tour. If you have not arrived by this time, we will give your spot to guests that came without a reservation. If you couldn´t book online in advance, you can come to the meeting point early and if we have enough spots available or no-shows, we will take you on a ´first come, first serve´basis.

Group size

How can we join if we are a group of 6 or more?

Free Tours are designed for individual travelers and small groups of friends. Therefore, if you are a bigger group of 6 or more we have a special, private offer for you. Just send an e-mail to info@goodviennatours.eu for requests and further information.

Is there a minimum of participants?

There is a minimum of 10 participants for our Free Walking Tours. If fewer than 10 people show up, the tour will unfortunately be canceled.

How big are the groups?

Due to the nature of walking tours, we aim to keep tour groups small and below 35 guests. There are rare exceptions during the high season, but 40 guests is our absolute maximum tour group size.
